Can art bring hope and healing? Do you remember when plywood went up on the windows of Minneapolis businesses in May of 2020? This was after the murder of George Floyd and voices rose up in a call for racial justice. It wasn’t long before this plywood became a blank canvas for artists of all kinds to begin to paint our city with hope. Art was everywhere! Through images and words and community appreciation there was a deeper empathy for a neighbor’s pain and a glimpse of hope for who we can be together. Can art really do all that?
During the season of Easter we will look at the resurrection through the lens of art, specifically the mural art in our city. We’ll use one mural each week as our central image, but we’ll send you out to see our neighborhoods with new eyes. Who lives there? What matters to them? How is God at work? How does the art project despair or hope or both? What kind of peace do we make in our city with art, poetry, and the promise of hope?
